The electric field in a dielectric barrier discharge is measured with picosecond second harmonic generation in multiple spatial locations as the high-voltage nanosecond discharges are varied between negative, positive, and alternating polarity trains.

Electric field-induced second harmonic generation (E-FISH) effectively measures non-equilibrium plasmas with sub-nanosecond time resolution. However, major air species may detrimentally impact E-FISH measurements across helium plasma because of the particle's low third-order nonlinear susceptibility. This error is accounted for by an absolution calibration using the Laplacian electric field in the same flow field and spatial locations.
